WHAT
De Reis van je Lewen’ is a Dutch reality show hosted by Johnny de Mol that delves into the lives of people faced with life-threatening illnesses or conditions. The show gives the selected participant the opportunity to live out the trip of a lifetime with their closest friends and/or family – essentially a bucket-list trip. In this episode, Hanno Bos – who suffers from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) – has chosen South Africa as the destination where, accompanied by his closest friends, he had shark-cage diving with Great Whites off Gansbaai, and a paragliding experience at the top of his list. We supplemented this with the shared passion of motorcycling with a trip to the Cape Point on vintage motorbikes with sidecars.
WHERE
The filming kicked off in Cape Town, and took us to Gansbaai and Hermanus to visit the Great White Sharks, and Hermanus – home of the Southern Right Whale – as well as to Cape Point for a poignant moment between them.
HIGHLIGHTS
The making of the programme was emotionally very draining, with the amazing Hano demonstrating absolute serenity and humility, and Johnny showing the sensitivity that is necessary when dealing with content like this. . The production signaled the start of a relationship with some really great people – crew and participants alike.
From a logistics point of view, this was right up there in terms of the most challenging projects, with the typical winter weather in Cape Town playing havoc with our production schedule. This meant changing locations and activities on a daily basis – even hourly in some cases. But we pulled the proverbial rabbit out of the hat and it all came together beautifully in the end.
