Customs and Equipment

Bring in your equipment – Ghana is not equipped with specialist gear houses, so careful gear planning is really important. This includes getting your equipment into the country, so working with a well connected, experienced fixer in Africa is paramount to ensuring that your kit arrives on time.

Access and Affordability

About 23 international airlines operate regularly scheduled flights into Accra, Ghana from major cities in Europe, the Middle East, North America, and the rest of Africa. Kotoka International Airport is modern, efficient and in keeping with the contemporary parts of the city. Taxis are the best way to get around in Ghana, although it is also advised to hire a car and driver if you’re travelling extensively.

Weather

April to June is the heaviest of the rainy seasons, so aim for between November and March which makes travelling easier because it’s dry. In terms of getting the optimum weather for wildlife viewing, aim for between December and April when the wildlife is more visible as they congregate around the watering holes in the reserves.

Top Film Locations

Mole National Park- Ghana’s largest wildlife refuge is set in grassland savannah in the north west of the country – great for elephant viewing! Many varied mammal and bird species.  On a historical note, the ancient slave and trading caravan route cuts through the park, and there is a cave where the locals hid from the slave traders. Wetlands, waterfalls and ruins of old villages destroyed by marauding slave raiders are scattered across the park.

Kumasi- If you are looking for a cultural hotspot, Kumasi is a great option. This Ashanti centre has a massive market that sells everything from sandals to jewellery, and artwork. Closeby is the crater lake called Lake Bosomtwe – rolling green hills which are great for your good for your outdoor sequences.

Elmina- This fishing port in the south of Ghana is known for its beaches, and for its former role in the slave trade, as well as a base for ivory and gold trade. Dutch and Portuguese crews may find this village interesting .

Cape Coast- This city is now the capital of the central region in the south of Ghana, but its large whitewashed castle is better known as a British holding prison for the slaves who were shipped offshore.

Kakum National Park- Looking for butterflies and birds? Head to the rainforest of Kakum National Park, also home to elephants and a variety of primates. The treetop canopy walkway offers a fabulous aerial view.
