WHAT
Dance connects people and cultures. In this cultural travel program, Dance Around The World, good friends Jan Kooijman and Ish Ait Hamou are looking for the soul of the Zulu warrior dance, the Indlamu. Former modern dancer Jan and hip hop dancer Ish go on a trip to South Africa to do the dance with a native Zulu tribe and learn more about their culture, and the dancing that weaves through it. Will they be Zulu enough to perform the Indlamu dance in front of the whole village?
WHERE
The programme moved from urban Johannesburg to a Gold Mine Compound, into a township ‘squatter camp, and then down to a rural village in Kwazulu Natal
HIGHLIGHTS
This was a pilot aimed at demonstrating how dance influences culture, and visa-versa. Based on the incredible footage, it was approved and is now rolling out worldwide!
A definite highlight was integrating first-world cast and crew into a very rural traditional environment – including Jan and Ish having to take part in the ritual slaughter of a cow. A challenge to set everything up, but very rewarding!
