Filming in Malawi
Filming in Malawi can be very rewarding. This lush country with insane vistas and location options allow you to sit back and let the camera do all the work. Known as the “Warm Heart of Africa”, because of the renowned friendliness and welcoming nature of the locals and the slow-and-steady lifestyle.
The best time to film in Malawi would be during the drier months, from May to October. These are the ideal months with very little rain, but the heat will get you.

CUSTOMS AND EQUIPMENT
The country is not a member of the ATA Carnet system, and so you will need to bring your equipment with you. We are very well acquainted with clearance agents and have worked well with various freight forwarders, and are able to provide multiple solutions to bringing any equipment in.
DRONE
It is possible to bring a drone in on a temporary import permit. This can cost a fair bit, considering the separate permit costs associated with flying and filming. So depending on the nature/scope of the shoot, we can go that route with you – alternatively, we can look at renting a drone locally.
VISAS AND PERMITS
Filming in Malawi could not be easier with their new e-visa system in place. There are a variety of supporting documents needed, however, but we can help with that. From there, a general film permit is needed, as well as media accreditation.
It is not a complicated process, but there is a fair amount of paperwork required. Film Fixers is able to navigate this process on your crews behalf, as we have built strong relationships with the authorities over time. Allow Film Fixers to secure your Malawi film permit, or simply peruse our website for general information. Either way, we’re here to help!

ACCESS AND AFFORDABILITY
Cairo International Airport is the primary international terminal in Egypt.
The majority of Malawi’s highways and main roads are in a fair condition, but the more rural roads are not well maintained, with potholes and severe flooding in the rainy seasons. Markets and the city centre also attract high traffic congestion, and it is advised to stay out of the rush hour.
Film Fixers highly recommends crews let us organize our local drivers who have experience navigating the many notorious roads of the African continent, as this ensures a smooth and safe experience for everyone involved and no issues with traffic police.
Known to be one of the safest countries in Africa – it is still advised, much like anywhere else in the world, that you keep your smarts about you, and watch out for your belongings, especially in the city.
Malawi is also one of the cheapest countries to travel through. This is a golden destination.
