Filming in Madagascar

Filming in Madagascar can be expensive. It is one of the more expensive countries we film in. However, it is unrivaled in its beauty that has developed in its isolation, being an island. The native flora is exquisite, as well as the local wildlife.

The best time to film in Madagascar would be from late April to late October. These are the ideal months with very little rain, and cooler temperatures.

CUSTOMS AND EQUIPMENT

The country IS a member of the ATA Carnet system, and so it is a lot easier to bring in equipment with you. This is essential, as there is little to no industry here – you will need to bring it all with you.

VISAS AND PERMITS

Filming in Madagascar is not too expensive in itself, as there is no proper film industry or infrastructure in place; however, depending on where you go (national parks, protected areas/animals), there might be some steep location costs.

A general film permit is required to film in Madagascar, as well as an entry visa. This is done through the Ministry of Culture and Communications; however, Film Fixers is able to navigate this process on your behalf, as we have built strong relationships with the authorities over time. Allow Film Fixers to secure your Madagascar film permit, or simply peruse our website for general information. Either way, we’re here to help!

ACCESS AND AFFORDABILITY

Ivato International Airport is the primary international terminal in Madagascar.

The roads in Madagascar are not the greatest. A lot of them are washed out with potholes and they are, at large, unmaintained. The choice of car is going to make the difference. Rush hour traffic is also not something you want to be caught in.

Film Fixers highly recommends crews let us organize our local drivers who have experience navigating the many notorious roads of the African continent, as this ensures a smooth and safe experience for everyone involved and no issues with traffic police.

Although Madagascar is incredibly safe, it is wise to keep an eye on your personals, and gear, especially in the big cities.

As far as affordability, like many of these islands – the huge drive of tourism, foreign investments and tricky accessibility, things can turn quite expensive. A good deal of planning can shave off a lot of unwanted costs. Chat to us – advice comes free!
