Filming in Ghana

Filming in Ghana is a premium location for your film or television production, if you are looking for bustling markets, natural scenic beauty, castles and forts of a bygone colonial era. This English speaking African country just north of the equator is full of friendly locals just waiting to welcome your crew.

The low costs, location options and fantastic tropical weather all contribute to a location that can satisfy a wide range of needs and budgets. Easy access to Ghana visas and filming permits as well as the low barriers to bringing in production equipment have also contributed to a compelling argument for Ghana as a production location.

The best time to film in Ghana is between November to February, with heat and rain being at minimal.

CUSTOMS AND EQUIPMENT

The country is not a member of the ATA Carnet system, and so crew will need additional permits to bring in film equipment from abroad.

We film in Ghana quite often, and we have established a strong, working relationship with the relevant authorities, clearance agents and customs officials. This allows us to provide you with various options for import.

Drone restrictions are less strict in Ghana than other countries – however, there are certain areas of No-Fly Zones, which must be adhered to. All drones must be registered with the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). A permit is required for both an operator, and a Civil Aviation Certificate of Registration for the drone itself. It is a time-consuming process, however, we handle this to make it as painless and seamless as possible. Drone insurance is required. Any night-flying will need special authorization.

Ghana does not have a large film industry, and so it is important to bring in what is needed.

VISAS AND PERMITS

Ghana visas and film permits can be a fairly difficult process. Usually with applications, there are a lot of channels that each application needs to go through – and so this may take some time. However, we are able to speed track a lot of this due to our long-standing relationship with the necessary departments, and we know how to navigate around any difficulties.

Each member of the crew is required to have Media Accreditation. This requires paperwork (which we will handle!) Security clearances are also required. The paperwork can take anywhere between 2-5 days to be processed. Ghana is very accommodating to film crews, and all requests can be accomplished if given enough time to organise.

ACCESS AND AFFORDABILITY

Kotoka International Airport is the primary international terminal in Egypt.

Ghana roads are notoriously difficult to navigate with some of the highest road congestion. The bustling cities and markets create a lot of traffic, however, the roads are in relatively good condition. Any crew filming in Ghana should be aware of busy streets, pedestrians and animals on the roads and lack of traffic lights.

Film Fixers highly recommends crews let us organize our local drivers who have experience navigating the many notorious roads of the African continent, as this ensures a smooth and safe experience for everyone involved and no issues with traffic police.
