Filming in Mozambique

Filming in Mozambique is often overlooked by other nearby islands (Zanzibar, Mauritius, Seychelles), however, this hidden gem is a strong contender.

Imagine mile after mile of idyllic palm-lined white sandy beaches looking out over crystal blue seas. Unbelievable marine biodiversity with tropical fish in every color you can imagine, giant manta rays, whale sharks, dolphins, nesting turtles, dugongs, the list is endless. Then when you’re finished shooting the idyllic beach scenes, a short drive takes you to the deep into the heart of the African bush, big 5 safaris in beautiful savannah and wilderness areas. And then there is the architecture.

The best time to film in Mozambique would be from May to October. These are the ideal months with very little rain, but the heat will get you.

CUSTOMS AND EQUIPMENT

The country is not a member of the ATA Carnet system, and so you will have to bring your equipment in with you. Otherwise, South Africa is right there, with Johannesburg being a world-class industry, with pretty much all the gear you could want.

However, it is a fairly complex – and manual – process which also involves a lot of negotiation. We know our way around the system and can take that headache away from you, and have good ground support to ensure that things move through the system – communication is less than optimal, so it is vital.

VISAS AND PERMITS

Mozambique film permits begin with an application letter for a shooting license. This is done through the National Institute of Cultural Creative Industries. There is a lot of paperwork involved in this, particularly due to the sensitivity involved around the national parks.

We have had many contacts with the BANP, and have strong relations with our contacts there. Applications are usually filed 1 month in advance; however, we are able to speed this process up.

It is a complicated process, and there is a fair amount of paperwork required. Film Fixers is able to navigate this process on your behalf, as we have built strong relationships with the authorities over time. Allow Film Fixers to secure your Mozambique film permit, or simply peruse our website for general information. Either way, we’re here to help!

DRONE

If you are filming with a drone, a drone usage authorisation license must be obtained from the Civil Aviation Authority. A copy of the license must be sent by email, and the original license must be shown at the BNAP office located in Bairro.

We have the necessary paperwork handy (and our own drone – already registered), and we know the system pretty well.

ACCESS AND AFFORDABILITY

Maputo International Airport is the primary international terminal in Mozambique.

The roads in Mozambique are infamous. From the badly maintained quality, traffic cops, flooding, potholes and crazy traffic in the center, we advise the slow-and-steady approach. Not to mention the livestock that pop up at you.

Film Fixers highly recommends crews let us organize our local drivers who have experience navigating the many notorious roads of the African continent, as this ensures a smooth and safe experience for everyone involved and no issues with traffic police.

Mozambique is a turbulent country, especially further north. Due to this, the political instability and the bad economic climate, we do advise a security approach in one form or another. Most places are quite easy to film in – however, locals are incredibly wary of cameras, and a local fixer is a good person to have on hand to handle uncomfortable situations.

The country is fairly cheap to travel and work in. Due to the huge distances between locations, the majority of your expenses will be traffic based.
