Filming in Namibia

Filming in Namibia is cheap, easy and an amazing experience. It is a unique location that has crazy scenery with the seaside blending seamlessly into sand dunes, and is packed with incredible wildlife and other landscapes.

The best time to film in Namibia would be from late March to late October. These are the ideal months with very little rain, but it can get incredibly cold there, especially being just off the cold sea currents and desert landscapes. However, you won’t find better stargazing.

This arid wilderness – referred to as ‘the land God made in anger’ is spectacularly beautiful, and because of its vastness, requires exceptional logistics preparation.

CUSTOMS AND EQUIPMENT

The country IS a member of the ATA Carnet system, facilitated through SACU, the South African Customs Union. However, the country is also situated just above South Africa, which allows for equipment shipping at a much reduced rate. Namibia itself has a strong and growing industry, with much of its access to gear coming from South Africa, and so it is fairly certain you’ll find whatever you need in a pinch.

VISAS AND PERMITS

Filming in Namibia requires some documentation to be submitted to the Namibian Film Commission, with some forms filled in as well. It is a step-by-step process, which requires feedback from the Namibian Ministry, so it can seem like eternity; however, Film Fixers is able to navigate this process on your behalf, as we have built strong relationships with the authorities over time. Allow Film Fixers to secure your crews’ Namibian film permit, or simply peruse our website for general information. Either way, we’re here to help!

DRONE

Much like South Africa, although drones are allowed in the country, it is not permitted to fly commercially. All commercial drone operations must be done by a locally registered company in Namibia.

NATIONAL PARKS

Once you have received your film permit, you are required to apply further through the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. These are fairly straightforward; however, they come with strict protocols in order to protect the fauna and flora.

ACCESS AND AFFORDABILITY

Hosea Kutako International Airport is the primary international terminal in Namibia.

Namibian roads are not too bad. They are not regularly maintained, and so potholes are common, and the rush-hour traffic is not something you want to be caught up in, however, it is fairly easy to navigate – with the right vehicle!

Film Fixers highly recommends crews let us organize our local drivers who have experience navigating the many notorious roads of the African continent, as this ensures a smooth and safe experience for everyone involved and no issues with traffic police.

Namibia can be quite affordable to film in, however, when it comes to national parks and animals, this does tend to get quite costly.
