Filming in eSwatini

Filming in eSwatini is easier than most African countries, with only a small bit of paperwork – but as always, we handle that, so that you don’t have to!

Being one of the smallest countries in Africa, eSwatini is very easy with regards to access and the people there are lovely to work with.

eSwatini is a hidden gem, with green country fields and harsh mountain terrain, nestled well within South Africa, it is a wonderful and culturally rich country to be in.

The best time to film in eSwatini would be from March to October, with relatively little rain and lower temperatures.

CUSTOMS AND EQUIPMENT

The country is a member of the ATA Carnet system, mainly through the SACU (South African Customs Union). Equipment can also be imported from nearby hubs such as South Africa (Johannesburg, Durban) – being a mere drive away.

VISAS AND PERMITS

Visas are a non-issue for most western passport holders. The entry will be a tourist visa (on arrival), so long as customs equipment and clearance check out.

Acquiring a film permit takes 5-10 working days, and we have great contacts in the country to help push paperwork through.

Flying a drone in eSwatini requires relevant authority through the SWACAA (Swaziland Civil Aviation Authority), and if you plan to bring you own, an import license is necessary. However, we do have our own drones that have flown that side if needed, and we have all paperwork already sorted.

ACCESS AND AFFORDABILITY

King Mswati III International Airport is the primary international terminal in eSwatini, however it is most likely that you will land in South Africa and cross overland. Timing is crucial, as many of these border checkpoints are used by overland truckers – they can clog up the road quickly!

eSwatini roads are easy and well maintained, even as you leave the city centre to some degree. However, it is good to have use of 4×4 capabilities due to the lack of infrastructure or offroads, which are SERIOUSLY off-road.

It is important to know that accommodation is not in abundance when you are outside of the luxury lodge budget. However, we have often filmed around the country and know of some key hidden gems not easily found on Google.

Film Fixers highly recommends crews let us organize our local drivers who have experience navigating the many notorious roads of the African continent, as this ensures a smooth and safe experience for everyone involved and no issues with traffic police.
